Lenten Reflection for Day 8

Bible Passage: Matthew 5:3 (NRSV)
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Reflection:
When I read this bible verse the words “poor in spirit” seem to jump out at me. What does that mean? Am I poor in spirit? How can one be blessed who is poor in spirit?
Jesus disciples gave up everything to follow him. When he sent them out to minister they were told to “proclaim the good news, the kingdom of heaven has come near. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment, give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics or sandals or staff.” (Matthew 10: 7-10). The disciples knew poverty and learned to rely on the generosity of others. They trusted that God would provide for their every need. And so they learned that they could not attain Gods Kingdom by their actions but by faith.
Being poor in spirit is an attitude. It is not boastful or bragging. It is being humble. It is realizing one cannot attain heaven alone. It is only thorough Gods grace that we will discover the kingdom of Heaven.
Ponder:
What have the results of my humble actions been? Have they produced greater result than when I have been boastful or forceful? Am I happier with material possessions or spiritual grace?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to realize I cannot do anything alone, that I need your spirit to guide and protect me. Amen
